Robinhood Referral: Sign Up and We Both Pick a Gift Stock — How It Really Works

Start here — sign up with my Robinhood referral link:

Sign up through my link and we both pick our own gift stock. Your pick is worth $5–$200 — and Robinhood's own published odds say about 99% of picks are worth $5, so expect a small free share, not a windfall.

You've probably seen the pitch: “Get free stock!” Robinhood's version is more interesting than most, because it isn't random — you pick the company yourself from a list of leading stocks. But the headline range hides the real math, and the reward comes with claim deadlines and holding rules most posts never mention. Here's how it works, what your pick is realistically worth, and the fine print.

How Your Gift Stock Works

The gift stock is Robinhood's new-customer sign-up reward:

• You sign up as a brand-new Robinhood customer (you must never have had a Robinhood individual brokerage account before), and your first taxable, self-directed individual investing account is approved.

• You link a bank account or debit card.

• Robinhood gives you a dollar amount — between $5 and $200 — to pick your own gift stock from a list of 26 of America's leading companies: the two largest S&P 500 companies in each of the top 13 sectors. Big, familiar names — not penny stocks.

• Your pick can be whole shares or fractional shares (pieces of a share), which is how a $5 reward can still go toward a stock costing hundreds per share.

One catch up front: the reward is a stock credit, not cash. The full amount must go into shares from that list — you can't just withdraw five dollars.

What Is the Gift Stock Actually Worth? (The Honest Odds)

This is the part the ads skip. Robinhood publishes the distribution of reward values in its own program terms:

• Approximately 99% of participants receive $5

• Approximately 0.9% receive $10

• Approximately 0.1% receive $200

So “$5 to $200” is technically true — but realistically, plan on $5. Think of the $200 as a lottery-style long shot attached to a genuine five-dollar share.

Two more honesty points. First, your gift stock is a real share (or fraction of one), and its price moves with the market — a $5 pick can be worth $4.60 next month. It is not guaranteed money. Second, all investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal — for money you deposit, too, not just the reward. A free share is a nice head start on learning how investing works; it is not a payday, and this post is education, not financial advice.

Signing Up With My Referral Link

Here's exactly how to join and claim your pick:

2. Apply for your account. Robinhood accounts are for US residents 18 or older; like any brokerage, Robinhood verifies your identity during the application.

3. Link a bank account or debit card. This step unlocks your gift stock reward.

4. Claim your reward within 60 days and pick your stock from the list of 26 companies. Rewards are credited within about a week after you claim.

5. Fund your account when you're ready. A deposit of any amount counts once it settles — and funding is what makes your sign-up count as my referral (below). Never deposit money you can't afford to have invested.

Miss the 60-day claim window and the reward expires — so if you sign up, claim promptly.

What I Get When You Sign Up (Full Transparency)

Robinhood replaced its referral program on September 1, 2026, with a tiered milestone program. I don't earn a bonus for every single sign-up — only when my cumulative qualifying referrals hit milestones: 1 referral → $50; 3 → $150; 10 → $800; 50 → $4,000; 200 → $10,000.

The bonuses are capped at $15,000 per year — and here's what makes the share text true: each milestone bonus arrives as a dollar amount I must use to pick whole or fractional shares from the same list of 26 companies. So we really do both pick our own gift stock — yours as a new customer, mine when your funded sign-up counts toward a milestone.

The Fine Print: Selling, Withdrawing, and Taxes

• Selling: you can sell your gift stock 3 trading days after you claim it, and reinvest the proceeds in other Robinhood stocks right away.

• Withdrawing: to take cash out, your reward's cash value must stay in the account for at least 60 days after claiming it. Robinhood's own example: receive $10 of stock, sell it, and that $10 still can't leave until 60 days pass.

• Fractional shares can't be transferred to another broker (whole shares transfer normally).

• Taxes: the value when you claim may be reported on a Form 1099; selling creates a capital gain or loss. Taxes are your responsibility.

• Limits: one reward per customer; all Robinhood offers combined can't exceed $15,000 per person per year; Robinhood can change or end the program anytime.

Robinhood Beyond the Bonus

• Commission-free trading of US stocks and ETFs in a self-directed account (other fees may apply).

• Fractional shares from $1 — invest in expensive stocks in dollar amounts instead of whole shares, in real time during market hours.

• An optional Gold subscription ($5/month or $50/year) with perks like interest on uninvested brokerage cash (a variable APY), bigger instant deposits, and a 3% match on eligible IRA contributions. Gold is completely optional — you do not need it for the gift stock.

The honest tradeoff: big traditional brokers offer deeper research, mutual funds, and phone support. Robinhood wins on simplicity and starting tiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the gift stock worth?

Between $5 and $200 — and per Robinhood's own terms, approximately 99% of participants receive $5, about 0.9% receive $10, and about 0.1% receive $200. Expect $5.

Do I have to deposit money to get my gift stock?

No — your pick is unlocked by getting approved and linking a bank account or debit card. (My referral counts toward my milestones once you also fund the account with a deposit that settles.)

When can I sell my gift stock — and withdraw the money?

Sell 3 trading days after claiming. Proceeds can be reinvested immediately, but the cash value must stay in your account for 60 days after claiming before it can be withdrawn.

What stocks can I pick from?

A list of 26 leading companies — the two largest S&P 500 companies in each of the top 13 sectors, per Robinhood's terms. Your reward buys whole or fractional shares of your pick.

I had a Robinhood account years ago. Do I qualify?

No — the reward is for new customers who have never previously had a Robinhood individual taxable brokerage account, and applies only to your first one.

Is the gift stock taxed?

It can be: the value when claimed may be reported on a Form 1099, and selling can create a capital gain or loss. Consult a tax advisor about your situation.

What does the person who referred me get?

Milestone bonuses under the tiered referral program — $50 at 1 qualifying referral, up to a $15,000-per-year cap — paid as stock credit used to pick shares from the same 26-company list. See the section above.

Does the offer expire?

Claim within 60 days or the reward expires. Robinhood can change or end the program at any time without notice — check the app for current terms.
