My Amex referral link now leads to one specific card, so this post can finally do the job a family-wide overview can't: a benefit-by-benefit breakdown of a single card. That card is the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card — the mid-tier Delta card, and the one occasional Delta flyers ask about most. Every figure below was verified on American Express's official card pages on October 20, 2026. Where the card is strong, I'll say so. Where the math doesn't work, I'll say that too.

The Welcome Offer — and Why I'm Not Promising You a Number

American Express markets this card as "apply and find out your welcome offer." On Amex's official Delta card page, the current public offer for the Gold Card reads: as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a $250 statement credit after you spend $3,000 or more in purchases on your new Card within your first 6 months of Card Membership, with the offer shown ending November 4, 2026.

Read the fine print the way Amex writes it: "as high as" is a ceiling, not a promise. Amex states you may not be eligible for the maximum welcome offer amount, referral offers can differ from the public offer, and offers change over time. My referral landing page doesn't display a figure at all — your offer is revealed during the application. Treat the public number as the neighborhood, and the application page as the contract.

What the Gold Card Earns

The earn rates are simple, and they're aimed at everyday life as much as travel:

2X miles on Delta purchases

2X miles at restaurants

2X miles at U.S. supermarkets

1X miles on all other eligible purchases

The grocery run and the Friday takeout order feed the same SkyMiles balance as your flights — no rotating categories to track, no activation clicks.

•The Benefits, One by One

First checked bag free — plus a second on domestic flights. Your first checked bag flies free on international and domestic Delta flights, and your second bag now flies free on domestic Delta flights too. Amex values the first-bag waiver at up to $90 saved on a round trip per person, and it covers you plus up to eight additional passengers traveling on the same reservation — just make sure your SkyMiles number is on the booking.

Zone 5 Priority Boarding. Board earlier than the main-cabin rush, with a realistic shot at overhead bin space for your carry-on.

TakeOff 15. Save 15% when you book Award Travel with miles on Delta flights through delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The discount doesn't apply to partner-operated flights or to taxes and fees.

$200 Delta Flight Credit. Spend $10,000 in purchases on the Card in a calendar year and you receive a $200 Delta Flight Credit toward future travel.

$100 Delta Stays Credit. Get up to $100 back per year as a statement credit when you book prepaid hotels or vacation rentals through Delta Stays on delta.com/stays.

$120 Rideshare Credit. After your first Card renewal, earn up to $10 back each month in statement credits on U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers — up to $120 a year. Enrollment is required.

20% back on in-flight purchases. Pay with the Card on a Delta flight and receive 20% back as a statement credit on eligible food and beverage purchases (wifi doesn't qualify).

Pay with Miles. On delta.com, take up to $50 off the cost of a flight for every 5,000 miles you redeem.

No foreign transaction fees, plus Amex staples like Purchase Protection, Extended Warranty, Baggage Insurance and the Global Assist® Hotline, pFrequently Asked Questions

What is the Delta SkyMiles Gold Card's annual fee?

A $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 (per American Express's official card page, October 2026).

Does the free checked bag cover my travel companions?

The first-bag waiver covers you and up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation (your SkyMiles number must be on it). Your second checked bag is also free on domestic Delta flights.

What welcome offer will I get through the referral link?

It varies. Amex's public page currently shows an offer of as high as 80,000 bonus miles plus a $250 statement credit ($3,000 spend in the first 6 months; offer shown ending November 4, 2026), but you may not be eligible for the maximum, and referral offers can differ. Your actual offer appears during your application.

When does the $120 rideshare credit start?

After your first Card renewal. Enrollment is required, it covers U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers, and it pays up to $10 back per month.

Is approval guaranteed if I use the referral link?

No. Approval is at American Express's discretion. A referral changes how the offer is presented — not the underwriting.

Ready to Apply?

If you fly Delta a few times a year, check bags, and pay your balance in full, the Gold Card's bag waivers alone can carry its fee — and the credits are upside. Apply through my referral link, read your actual offer on the application page, and decide with the real numbers in front of you:

The Fee Math: $0, Then $150

The Gold Card carries a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150. So the real question starts in year two. Using Amex's own figure — up to $90 saved per round trip on the first checked bag — two round trips a year puts roughly $180 of bag savings against the $150 fee, before counting the second free domestic bag, TakeOff 15, or any credit. Traveling as a family on one reservation, a single trip can clear the fee on bag waivers alone.

But flip it around: if you fly Delta once a year, carry on only, and never touch Delta Stays or rideshare, the fee buys perks you won't use — and the honest move is to skip it.

How Applying Through the Referral Works

  1. Tap my referral link: https://americanexpress.com/en-us/referral/delta-skymiles-gold-american-express-card?ref=RONALD5Fhl&xl=cp01

  2. 2. Review the Gold Card's benefits and your welcome offer on the application page.

  3. 3. Apply. Amex lets you find out if you're approved with no impact to your credit score — if you're approved and choose to accept the Card, your credit may be impacted at that point.

  4. 4. If you're approved and get the Card, your welcome offer applies per the terms you accepted — and we could both earn rewards, per the referral terms.Approval is always at American Express's discretion, based on creditworthiness and other factors. It is never guaranteed, and no blog post can change that.Where Gold Sits in the LineupFor context from the same official page: the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card ($350 annual fee) adds a yearly Companion Certificate and 3X miles on Delta and eligible hotel purchases; the Reserve Card ($650 annual fee) adds Delta Sky Club visits and premium perks. Gold skips the lounge-and-certificate tier and concentrates on what most Delta flyers actually use — bags, boarding, everyday 2X categories, and statement credits. For one to four Delta trips a year, it's the value seat in the lineup.
